Score and Parts

Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706) is one of the most important composers of the high baroque period, was organ teacher of the brother of J.S. Bach and is known to most by his composition "Canon and Gigue". The combination of Italian virtuosity and melody with North Alpine counterpoint is, so to speak, his "trademark", and so his organ meditations are of particular interest, since they all sound like improvisations in a strict form that were then put on paper.

Composers often chose the name "fantasy" to demonstrate that they are not sticking to a musical form, but would like to exceed it in an imaginative way. This request can also be felt in Pachelbel's imagination: playful melody with harmonies progressing calmly, beautifully and intimately.
